White-winged Dove

The White-winged Dove, Zenaida asiatica, is a member of the Columbidae family native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America. Unlike many migratory species, this bird has expanded its range northward over the last century, often capitalizing on agricultural expansion and the proliferation of bird feeders in suburban environments. Its signature appearance, characterized by the distinct white patches on the wings that are visible during flight, evolved as a visual signal within the species.

The bird was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Its design—a stout body, rounded wings, and a square-tipped tail—is a functional adaptation for rapid, direct flight. It is frequently noted for its loud, rhythmic 'who-cooks-for-you' vocalization, which has made it a familiar auditory presence in the Sonoran Desert and throughout its range. While it remains a popular subject for birders, it has also been historically managed as a game bird due to its abundance in agricultural regions.
