Yellow-bellied Tanager

The Yellow-bellied Tanager (Ixothraupis xanthogastra) is a neotropical bird native to the humid forests of the Amazon basin and the Andean foothills. Taxonomically, it belongs to the Thraupidae family, a diverse group of passerines renowned for their vibrant plumage. It was first formally described by the naturalist Sclater in 1851, identified by its distinctively bright yellow underparts and olive-green dorsal coloration. Its morphology, featuring rounded wings and a rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the dense, tangled canopy of tropical rainforests.

The classification of this species has evolved alongside advancements in ornithological research. Originally placed in the genus Tangara, phylogenetic studies led to its reassignment to the genus Ixothraupis. The design of the species reflects a specialized ecological niche, favoring high-canopy habitats where its rounded wing structure facilitates short, agile flights between fruiting trees. While it remains a subject of ongoing study in avian biology, it is generally considered a stable, non-threatened species that represents the characteristic biodiversity of the South American lowland forests.
