Yellow-green Vireo

The Yellow-green Vireo, scientifically known as Vireo flavoviridis, is a migratory passerine bird primarily distributed across the tropical regions of the Americas, ranging from southern Texas and Mexico down to the Amazon basin. It was formally described by the ornithologist John Cassin in 1851, who recognized it as a distinct species despite its morphological similarity to the Red-eyed Vireo. Within the broader family Vireonidae, it is characterized by its rounded wing shape, which aids in its maneuvering through dense canopy foliage, and its distinctively notched tail.

The species is distinguished by its olive-green upperparts and yellow-washed flanks, a design evolution that serves as effective camouflage in the sun-dappled environments of its breeding range. Ornithologists often study the species for its complex song patterns and its role in neotropical ecosystems, where it functions as an active insectivore. While it lacks the expansive North American range of some of its cousins, it has been historically documented by field biologists for its consistency in habitat selection and its migratory behavior, which sees northern populations move toward South America during the winter months.
