Yellow-winged Vireo

The Yellow-winged Vireo, Vireo carmioli, is a passerine bird endemic to the highland forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described by ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence in 1874, the species occupies a distinct ecological niche in the canopy of oak forests and elfin woods, typically found at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 meters. Its taxonomy situates it within the family Vireonidae, characterized by its characteristic rounded wing shape and subtle notched tail, which facilitate its movement through dense cloud forest foliage.

The bird is noted for its specific plumage, featuring prominent yellow wing bars and a distinct yellow supraloral stripe. As an insectivore, its evolutionary development reflects a specialization for foraging among mossy branches, often in mixed-species flocks.
