A la carte was designed by Karl-Heinz Schmiel and originally published in 1989 by his own company, Moskito Spiele. It emerged during a period of experimentation in German game design, moving away from the dry economic simulations often associated with the era toward more tactile, physical experiences. The game was conceptualized as a lighthearted culinary challenge, requiring players to mimic the act of cooking by physically flicking small plastic pan pieces to adjust the heat level.

The design is notable for its innovative use of dexterity elements within a structured board game framework. By tasking players with 'cooking' dishes through physical interaction, Schmiel successfully blended social gameplay with a mechanical gimmick that felt fresh and engaging. While it never achieved the massive global distribution of later, more contemporary hits, the game was well-received for its whimsical nature and charm, eventually seeing a notable reprint by Schmidt Spiele in 2010 that introduced updated, more colorful components.
