Provenance

Where it came from

Kryptos is a cryptic sculpture created by American artist Jim Sanborn, installed on the grounds of the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia, in 1990. Commissioned as a centerpiece for the agency's new headquarters, the work consists of four large, curved copper plates etched with complex, ciphered messages. Sanborn intended to reflect the nature of intelligence work, crafting a puzzle that would test the skills of the very analysts who walked past it daily.

The design process involved collaboration between Sanborn and Ed Scheidt, a former chairman of the CIA's Cryptographic Center, to develop the encryption methods used on the sculpture. While three of the four sections have been solved by cryptanalysts over the decades, the final passage remains one of the world's most famous unsolved puzzles. The piece is highly regarded in both the art and intelligence communities for its durability, mystery, and the persistent intellectual challenge it presents to the public.
