Tafl games, a family of ancient Germanic and Celtic board games, emerged in Northern Europe around the 4th century. Played widely across Scandinavia and the British Isles during the Viking Age, these games served as a popular pastime until they were largely supplanted by the arrival of chess in the 12th century. The games are characterized by their asymmetric design, where a central king piece must reach the periphery of the board to escape, while a larger force of attackers attempts to capture him.

The physical design of tafl boards varied significantly based on status and geography, ranging from simple carved wooden slabs to ornate pieces utilizing bone, antler, or stone. The most well-known iteration, Hnefatafl, utilized a grid pattern of squares rather than lines, with the specific number of squares often fluctuating depending on regional traditions. Archaeological discoveries, such as the Ballinderry game board, suggest that these games were deeply integrated into the social and strategic fabric of early medieval life, reflecting the period's military values.
