Taikyoku shogi

Taikyoku shogi, or ultimate chess, emerged during the mid-Edo period of Japan as a specialized variant of shogi intended for elite intellectual play. Developed as an expansion of historical dai shogi, it is played on a massive 36x36 board with 804 pieces representing 209 different types, many of which possess complex, far-reaching movement patterns that defy standard shogi conventions. Its design reflects the period's interest in increasingly elaborate board games, serving as a display of strategic complexity rather than a game intended for casual matches.

The game is widely attributed to the scholarly culture of the time, though no single designer is credited with its invention. Historically, it was rarely played in its entirety due to the extreme duration of a single match, which could last several days. Modern documentation of the game was significantly advanced by the research of figures like George Hodges, whose efforts in the late 20th century preserved the movement rules for the various obscure pieces, allowing contemporary enthusiasts to study and simulate the game as a historical curiosity.
