Where it came from
The White Castle was published in 2023 by Devir Games as part of their strategy line, designed by the duo Shei S. and Isra C., collectively known as Llama Dice. The game is set in the Himeji Castle in Japan, challenging players to manage resources, influence, and court positions within the castle's complex hierarchy. It emerged during a period of rising interest in medium-weight eurogames that emphasize tight, efficient mechanics and high-quality aesthetic presentation.
The design draws heavily on the historical significance of the Himeji Castle, known as the White Heron Castle for its brilliant white exterior. The developers sought to capture the tension of life within the Shogunate, focusing on the delicate balance of gaining favor with the lord while managing limited actions. Upon release, the game was widely praised for its compact design and the clever use of dice placement, earning recognition for providing a deep, strategic experience within a relatively small game footprint.
