A Plain Vanilla Murder

A Plain Vanilla Murder is the twenty-seventh installment in Susan Wittig Albert’s long-running China Bayles mystery series. First published in 2019, the novel continues the narrative of China, a former criminal defense attorney turned herb shop owner in the fictional Texas town of Pecan Springs. Albert, who began the series in 1992, utilizes her background in academic research to ground the story in themes of herbal lore and local community dynamics, providing a cozy mystery experience that favors character development and setting over visceral tension.

The book is a testament to the longevity of the amateur sleuth archetype in contemporary American mystery fiction. Susan Wittig Albert’s design for the series emphasizes a consistent thematic interplay between the history of botany and contemporary domestic suspense. By the time this entry was released, the series had garnered a dedicated readership and consistent critical appreciation for its steady character progression and the reliable, methodical nature of China Bayles's investigations.
