Where it came from
Published in 1944, this scholarly work by Giuseppe Carlo Rossi serves as a foundational exploration of the influence exerted by Italian epic poetry of the Cinquecento on Portuguese literature. Rossi, a noted Italian Lusitanist, sought to map the complex cultural dialogue between the two nations, specifically focusing on how the structural and thematic innovations of Italian epicists like Ariosto and Tasso permeated the literary landscape of Renaissance Portugal.
The text was produced during a period when comparative literature was emerging as a rigorous academic discipline in Europe. Rossi’s design approach was deeply rooted in the traditions of philology, favoring meticulous citation and historical contextualization to trace the transmission of literary motifs. While it remains a niche academic publication, it is highly regarded among specialists for its archival depth and its contribution to understanding the cross-pollination of Mediterranean poetic traditions during the sixteenth century.
