A Summary Of The History, Construction And Effects In Warfare Of The Projectile-throwing Engines Of The Ancients With A Treatise On The Structure, ... Oriental Bows Of Mediaeval And Later Times

Originally published in 1907, this work by Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey serves as a foundational engineering study of historical siege weaponry. It was born from the author's deep fascination with mechanical artillery, specifically the catapults, ballistae, and trebuchets used by Greek and Roman armies. Payne-Gallwey, an expert in the field of archery and traditional weaponry, sought to provide a rigorous, technical examination of these devices, moving beyond the speculative descriptions found in earlier academic texts to offer practical insights into how these engines were constructed and operated.

The book is notable for its extensive collection of illustrations and detailed diagrams, which Payne-Gallwey himself prepared to aid in the reconstruction of these complex machines. By analyzing surviving fragments and cross-referencing ancient military accounts, he aimed to demystify the mechanics of medieval warfare. The work was well-received by historians and military engineers of the era, who valued his hands-on approach to experimental archaeology, and it remains a primary reference for those studying the evolution of pre-gunpowder ballistics.
