A system of Christian doctrine

A System of Christian Doctrine represents the culmination of the work of Isaak August Dorner, a prominent 19th-century German Protestant theologian. Originally published in German in 1879-1880, this English translation was released in 1883 by T. & T. Clark as part of their influential Foreign Theological Library. The series was designed to bridge the gap between German academic theology and the English-speaking world, providing scholars and clergy access to the rigorous intellectual currents emerging from the University of Berlin.

Dorner’s work is noted for its attempt to reconcile the traditional tenets of Christian faith with the philosophical developments of his era, particularly those surrounding human consciousness and ethics. He utilized a Christocentric approach, arguing that the divinity and humanity of Christ provide the necessary framework for understanding all other aspects of dogmatic theology. At the time of its release, the text was received as a masterful, albeit dense, contribution to systematic theology, cementing Dorner's reputation as a key figure in the mediation school of theology.
