A System of Christian Doctrine; Volume 1

A System of Christian Doctrine represents the culmination of the theological career of Isaak August Dorner, a prominent 19th-century German Lutheran theologian. Originally published in the mid-1870s as System der christlichen Glaubenslehre, the work was designed as a comprehensive synthesis of Protestant dogmatics. Dorner sought to bridge the divide between traditional confessional orthodoxy and the burgeoning historical-critical methods of his era, attempting to harmonize faith with the rigorous philosophical inquiry characteristic of the Prussian academic tradition.

The text is widely recognized for its intellectual depth and its Christocentric focus, which significantly influenced theological discourse in both Europe and the United States during the late 19th century. The 2018 edition published by Legare Street Press serves as a modern facsimile, aimed at preserving access to this influential academic resource for contemporary students of historical theology. Because it is a scholarly reprint, the design focuses on technical preservation rather than artistic innovation, ensuring that Dorner’s complex arguments remain accessible to researchers interested in the evolution of modern systematic theology.
