Where it came from
Published in 1997 by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Ibn Zohr University, this scholarly work by Abd al-Nabi Dhakir serves as a critical examination of the genre of travel literature concerning Morocco. It emerged from the academic environment of the late 20th century in Morocco, a period characterized by a surge in intellectual efforts to deconstruct and analyze Western perspectives on North African history, culture, and society.
The book explores the dichotomy between the real and the imagined within European travelogues directed toward the Maghreb. Dhakir’s research is positioned within the field of post-colonial literary criticism, focusing on how European travelers constructed their narratives of Morocco. The text is recognized for its contribution to regional historiography and its rigorous methodological approach to analyzing the biases and literary tropes prevalent in travel writing during the colonial and pre-colonial eras.
