Altera ratio: klassische Philologie zwischen Subjektivit at und Wissenschaft. Festschrift f ur Werner Suerbaum zum 70. Geburtstag

Published in 2003 by Franz Steiner Verlag, this volume was compiled as a Festschrift to honor the 70th birthday of Werner Suerbaum, a distinguished scholar in the field of classical philology. Such collections are traditional academic tributes, bringing together original essays and research from colleagues, former students, and peers to celebrate the honoree's lifelong contributions to the study of Latin literature and classical antiquity.

The book, edited by Markus Schauer, reflects the broader intellectual atmosphere of early 21st-century German philological discourse. The title, Altera ratio, underscores the tension between individual interpretation and objective scientific methodology in the humanities. The contributors utilized the volume to engage with Suerbaum’s specific interests in Roman epic poetry and the history of scholarship, positioning the work as both a respectful homage and a serious contribution to contemporary academic debates within the discipline.
