Where it came from
Published in 1978 by Le Musée, this monograph serves as a focused introduction to the work of Alain Kirili, a French-American sculptor known for his rhythmic, minimalist approach to abstract form. Released during a pivotal period in Kirili’s career as he began to bridge the gap between European tradition and the burgeoning American post-minimalist scene, the book captures his early exploration of verticality, repetition, and the physical presence of materials like iron and clay.
The publication functions as a critical documentation of Kirili’s aesthetic philosophy, which emphasized the direct interaction between the artist's gesture and the raw medium. By presenting his sculptures within the context of the museum environment, the work highlights his commitment to site-specific installations and the dialogue between sculpture and architectural space, solidifying his reputation among contemporary art curators and critics of the late 1970s.
