Where it came from
Published in 2006 by Onestar Press, this artist's book is a characteristic example of Alain Séchas's focus on the intersection of drawing, sculpture, and video. Séchas is best known for his recurring motifs of anthropomorphic cats, which he uses to explore themes of banality, human desire, and existential absurdity. By choosing the book as a medium, Séchas extends his minimalist, graphic aesthetic into a tangible, sequential format that mirrors his gallery-based installations.
Onestar Press, a Parisian publisher known for its dedication to the artist's book as a unique medium, produced this title as part of its ongoing series of monographs. The design focuses on the primacy of the artist's line, maintaining a stark and direct visual language that strips away decorative excess. The work was received within the contemporary art community as a concise distillation of Séchas's cynical yet whimsical critique of modern societal norms, reinforcing his stature in the French contemporary art scene.
