Alain Touraine

Published in 1996 by Falmer Press, this volume is a critical scholarly engagement with the work of the French sociologist Alain Touraine. It emerged during a period of intense academic interest in Touraine's theories of post-industrial society, social movements, and the sociology of action. As part of a series examining influential thinkers in education and social theory, the book was commissioned to distill complex sociological frameworks into a format accessible to students and researchers, providing a comprehensive critique of how Touraine’s ideas shifted the landscape of modern European sociology.

The editorial vision for this text focused on contextualizing Touraine's departure from traditional Marxist class analysis toward a focus on cultural identity and subjectification. Contributors to the volume sought to balance an appreciation of Touraine’s intellectual contributions with a rigorous interrogation of his methodology. Upon its release, it was received as a valuable pedagogical tool, praised for its clarity in navigating the nuanced debates surrounding late-modernity and the changing role of social actors in contemporary democratic states.
