Andrea Bowers & Catherine Opie (Between Artists)

Published in 2008 by A.R.T. Press as part of their Between Artists series, this volume captures a candid, recorded conversation between contemporary artists Andrea Bowers and Catherine Opie. The series was designed to provide intimate, unfiltered dialogues between prominent figures in the art world, stripping away the formality of traditional critical essays to focus on shared studio concerns, political engagement, and the evolving landscape of American art at the turn of the millennium.

The book serves as a vital record of the creative friendship and intellectual exchange between Bowers, known for her activist-driven practice, and Opie, whose photography famously documents LGBTQ+ subcultures and American identity. The design of the volume reflects the series' signature aesthetic: minimalist and archival, prioritizing the transcript of their discussion to ensure the focus remains on their distinct perspectives and the rapport that defined their collaborative discourse. It was received as a significant contribution to the documentation of contemporary artistic thought, bridging the gap between social commentary and fine art photography.
