Architectural Conservation and Restoration in Norway and Russia

Published in 2017 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis, this scholarly work serves as a critical examination of architectural preservation practices within the distinct cultural and political frameworks of Norway and Russia. Written by Evgeny Khodakovsky, a scholar noted for his focus on northern European architectural history, the book addresses the complex challenges of maintaining heritage sites exposed to harsh climates and shifting historical ideologies. It emerged as part of a broader academic effort to facilitate cross-border dialogue between Scandinavian and Russian conservation experts, offering a comparative analysis of how each nation reconciles modern development with the preservation of wooden architecture and medieval masonry.

The volume is designed as a technical and historical reference, prioritizing clarity and academic rigor to assist professionals in the field of restoration. Khodakovsky utilizes his extensive research into historical archives to chart the evolution of restoration philosophy, from early Romantic ideals of preservation to contemporary sustainability standards. While the text is primarily intended for specialists, architects, and historians, it is recognized for bridging linguistic and professional gaps, providing a cohesive study that highlights the shared, yet divergently managed, architectural legacies of the Barents region.
