Where it came from
Published in 2006 by the independent Swiss imprint Nieves, this book serves as a compact survey of the raw, intimate photography of Ari Marcopoulos. Marcopoulos emerged from the 1980s New York art scene, initially gaining recognition for documenting the peripheral worlds of skateboarding, snowboarding, and underground hip-hop culture with an unfiltered, candid aesthetic.
The book embodies the signature minimalist design ethos of Nieves founder Benjamin Sommerhalder, who focused on zine-like accessibility and affordable distribution. By capturing the everyday moments of his subjects—often friends and peers within youth subcultures—Marcopoulos stripped away the polish of commercial photography, helping to define a style of visual storytelling that prioritized personal connection and authentic lived experience over staged composition.
