Art in the System. the System in Art

Published in 2023, Art in the System, the System in Art serves as a comprehensive retrospective and analytical exploration of the work of Karl-Heinz Adler, a pivotal figure in European geometric abstraction and concrete art. Born out of a need to document the rigorous, modular logic that defined Adler's career, the volume contextualizes his transition from East German state-sanctioned art to his later international recognition as a pioneer of serial systems and structural patterns.

The publication was curated by Markus Dreßen, Anne König, and Jan Wenzel, who sought to highlight the architectural and mathematical precision inherent in Adler's approach to composition. By balancing personal history with extensive visual documentation of his drawings and installations, the editors aim to demonstrate how Adler transformed basic geometric units into complex, rhythmic visual languages. The book has been received by scholars as a significant contribution to understanding the intersection of mid-century systemic art and modern architectural design.
