Augen zeugen

Augen zeugen, authored by Thomas Lehmann and published by A. Francke in 2003, emerged as a scholarly contribution to the field of German literary studies. The work focuses on the intersection of visual perception and narrative structure, analyzing how the concept of the witness is mediated through literary texts. It was produced during a period when media theory and cultural studies were exerting a significant influence on traditional philological analysis, reflecting an academic climate that sought to bridge the gap between historical literature and contemporary visual culture.

The design and conceptual framework of the book were informed by Lehmann’s rigorous approach to hermeneutics. By positioning the 'eye-witness' as both a sensory actor and a textual construct, the volume aimed to challenge standard interpretations of subjective narration. It was received within the academic community as a dense, specialized examination of perspective, primarily finding its home in university libraries and the personal collections of researchers interested in the phenomenology of reading and the sociology of perception.
