Avalanche accidents in Canada

Avalanche Accidents in Canada, authored by Bruce Jamieson, serves as a cornerstone text in mountain safety literature. Published by the Canadian Avalanche Association in the mid-1990s, the work was commissioned to synthesize decades of field reports and accident data into a coherent educational resource. It emerged from the urgent need to standardize risk assessment protocols for professionals and recreational backcountry enthusiasts working in the high-stakes environment of the Canadian mountains.

Dr. Bruce Jamieson, a leading expert in snow science, approached the design of the book with a pedagogical focus, emphasizing the analysis of human factors alongside physical snow mechanics. The text is celebrated for its grounded, clinical exploration of why accidents occur, moving beyond mere descriptive accounts to provide actionable lessons. It has been widely received by the avalanche community as an essential, authoritative reference that has significantly informed modern safety curriculum and field decision-making processes.
