Ballenesque : Roger Ballen

Ballenesque: Roger Ballen was published in 2017 as a comprehensive retrospective of the work of American photographer Roger Ballen, who has spent decades based in South Africa. The monograph serves as a definitive survey of his unique aesthetic, which evolved from stark documentary photography of rural South Africa into the surreal, unsettling, and psychologically charged staged tableaux he calls the Ballenesque. By gathering his most significant imagery into a single volume, the collection documents a singular vision that blurs the lines between reality and dark, subconscious fiction.

The design of the book reflects the grit and theatricality characteristic of Ballen’s oeuvre, utilizing stark contrasts and a deliberate pacing to draw viewers into his claustrophobic, monochrome worlds. It was produced by Thames & Hudson to offer both a chronological journey through his career and a thematic examination of his obsession with the human condition and the 'shadow' side of the psyche. Upon its release, the volume was received as a primary text for understanding his influence on contemporary fine art photography and the development of his distinctive visual language.
