Where it came from
This volume serves as a comprehensive catalog published by the Centro Cultural Matucana 100 in Santiago, Chile, to accompany a 2010 exhibition of Roger Ballen's work. Ballen, an American-born photographer who spent much of his career documenting the social landscape of South Africa, created a body of work defined by his signature aesthetic—often termed 'Ballenesque'—which blends documentary realism with surreal, unsettling, and psychological undertones.
The publication captures the evolution of Ballen’s transition from his earlier, stark black-and-white portraits of marginalized individuals in rural South Africa toward his more theatrical, constructed installations. By highlighting the jarring compositions and domestic spaces characteristic of his vision, the catalog documents the artist's focus on the uncanny and the human psyche, reflecting his intent to challenge the viewer's perception of sanity and social marginalization.
