Bernd und Hilla Becher

Published in 2001 by Deutscher Kunstverlag, this monograph serves as a comprehensive academic examination of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. The duo is internationally renowned for their systematic, rigorous black-and-white photography of industrial structures—such as water towers, blast furnaces, and coal bunkers—which they presented in grid-like typologies. This volume situates their practice at the intersection of conceptual art and documentary photography, reflecting the late 20th-century shift toward the 'Düsseldorf School' of photography.

Martina Dobbe provides a scholarly analysis of the Bechers' photographic philosophy, which emphasizes objectivity, repetition, and the sculptural qualities of functional architecture. The text explores how their methodology influenced generations of students at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, defining an era of European art. As a foundational reference, the book is valued by collectors for its critical depth and its documentation of the legacy left by a pair whose work forever changed the way the built environment is cataloged and perceived.
