Bernd Koberling

Published in 2006 by Richter Verlag, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of the work of Bernd Koberling, a prominent figure in the contemporary German art scene. The book was produced to accompany exhibitions of his work, documenting his evolution from the 1960s through the early 2000s. Bera Nordal, an expert in Nordic and contemporary art, curated the text to contextualize Koberling’s transition from conceptual and action-based art into his signature large-scale, expressive landscape paintings.

The publication captures the shift in Koberling’s focus toward the raw, elemental environments of Scandinavia, particularly Iceland, which became central to his practice. The design emphasizes the textural quality of his impasto technique, providing a visual record of his deep engagement with the rugged northern wilderness. As a critical retrospective, the volume was well-received in academic and art circles for its ability to bridge the gap between Koberling's early, more radical roots and his later, atmospheric depictions of nature.
