Where it came from
Published in 1984 by Studio d'arte Cannaviello, this monograph documents the work of Bernd Zimmer, a pivotal figure in the Neue Wilde movement that emerged in Germany during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The book serves as a vital record of Zimmer's transition from traditional representational painting to a more visceral, gestural style that emphasized raw emotion and intense color palettes, reflecting the post-modern shift in the European art scene at the time.
The publication was designed to provide a comprehensive look at Zimmer’s artistic evolution, capturing the spirit of the 'Heftige Malerei' (intense painting) style which prioritized spontaneity and subjective expression. By archiving his works from this highly productive period, the volume offers critical insight into the aesthetic priorities of the era, where artists sought to break away from the minimalist and conceptual constraints that dominated the previous decade.
