Published in 1746 by Reinier Boitet, this work serves as a foundational account of Greenland by the Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede. Egede arrived in Greenland in 1721 with the intent of re-establishing contact with the descendants of the Norse settlers who had vanished centuries earlier, as well as to convert the Inuit population to Christianity. The book documents his missionary efforts and his observations of the local geography and culture during his fifteen-year stay, providing a rare European perspective on the region in the early 18th century.

The text is significant not only for its theological motivations but also for its ethnographic and cartographic contributions to 18th-century European knowledge of the Arctic. Egede's design and narrative approach sought to reconcile the harsh realities of Greenlandic life with the sensibilities of a contemporary Dutch and Danish readership.
