Where it came from
Bricksy, published in 2015, emerged from the creative project of Canadian photographer Jeff Friesen. Drawing inspiration from the elusive British street artist Banksy, Friesen sought to recreate iconic stencil art pieces using LEGO bricks. The collection began as a personal photographic exploration, translating the social commentary and gritty aesthetic of urban street art into the structured, colorful world of plastic building blocks.
The book serves as a compilation of these meticulously crafted dioramas, which emphasize the juxtaposition between the permanence of LEGO constructions and the transient nature of graffiti. Friesen's design approach relies on clever framing and subtle humor to mimic the style of Banksy’s original works. Upon release, the volume was well-received by fans of both pop culture photography and the LEGO enthusiast community, praised for its innovative bridge between street art subculture and toy-based creative expression.
