Where it came from
Bruno Serralongue's Calais documents the complex and often precarious situation of migrants living in northern France between 2006 and 2018. The publication serves as a comprehensive photographic record of the landscape and the makeshift camps that formed in the region, capturing the evolving reality of the Calais 'Jungle' and its subsequent clearances. Published by Heni in 2022, the book frames these images not as traditional photojournalism, but as a deliberate study of the intersection between political geography and artistic representation.
The volume was curated to provide a formal perspective on Serralongue’s sustained engagement with the border crisis, emphasizing his methodology of delayed documentation. By avoiding the immediacy of news reportage in favor of a more methodical, almost clinical approach to the landscape, the design reflects his intent to distance the viewer from the spectacle of humanitarian suffering. The work has been noted for its critical contribution to contemporary documentary photography, offering a sober examination of how the built environment and human transience are rendered within the frame of history.
