Catalogus van het Rijks-Museum van schilderijen

The 1885 Catalogus van het Rijks-Museum van schilderijen serves as a historical milestone, published to document the collection during the museum's inaugural year in its iconic Pierre Cuypers-designed building in Amsterdam. As the national museum transitioned into this new, monumental structure, the publication was essential for scholars and the visiting public to navigate the vast transition of artworks from the Trippenhuis and other locations into a unified, permanent home.

This edition reflects the late nineteenth-century approach to art cataloging, balancing the formal requirements of an institutional inventory with the needs of a growing international art tourism sector. It was designed as a reliable, authoritative guide that mirrored the museum's broader mission to define the Dutch national identity through its Golden Age masterpieces. The catalog is widely regarded by contemporary researchers as a primary document for understanding the original layout and curatorial priorities of the museum at the time of its opening.
