Catalogus van het Rijks-museum van schilderijen

The Catalogus van het Rijks-museum van schilderijen was first issued in the early nineteenth century to document the growing holdings of the newly established national art collection in Amsterdam. These foundational volumes were created to transition the museum from a royal repository into a public institution, providing scholars and visitors with a systematic inventory of Dutch masterworks that were increasingly recognized as essential to the national identity.

The design of these early catalogues focused on scholarly utility, prioritizing structured entries, artist attributions, and precise descriptions of medium and subject matter. While later editions saw significant updates in layout and photography, the initial volumes were shaped by the rigorous cataloging standards of the era's curators, who sought to impose order on a collection that had recently migrated from the Huis ten Bosch to the Trippenhuis, and eventually to its permanent home in the purpose-built Rijksmuseum.
