Chiang Kai-Shek's Secret Past

Chiang Kai-Shek's Secret Past is the English-language edition of the memoirs written by Ch'en Chieh-ju, who was the second wife of the Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek. Originally drafted in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the manuscript remained largely suppressed for decades due to its sensitive political content, which challenged the carefully curated public image of Chiang. The narrative provides an intimate, often critical look at Chiang’s rise to power, their marriage, and the political machinations of the Kuomintang during a turbulent period in Chinese history.

This specific 2019 publication by Taylor & Francis Group serves as an important scholarly contribution, reintroducing these historical recollections to a new generation of researchers. Edited with academic rigor, the edition provides necessary context for the memoirs, which were long embroiled in controversies regarding their authenticity and the political motivations behind their initial intended publication. By making the text accessible, this volume allows historians to better understand the domestic life and personal complexities of one of the 20th century's most significant political figures.
