Chicken Feed

Chicken Feed, written and illustrated by Jamie Chiahui Gao, was self-published in 2024. As an independent work, the book reflects Gao's specific creative vision, focusing on personal storytelling and visual narrative. It emerged from the modern tradition of independent, self-published literature, where creators retain full control over the aesthetic and structural elements of their work, allowing for a more intimate connection between the author's intent and the final printed object.

The design of the book is characterized by an earnest, minimalist approach that prioritizes the clarity of Gao's narrative voice. By navigating the self-publishing landscape, Gao bypassed traditional institutional filters, resulting in a project that serves as a direct extension of the author's personal inquiry. While it remains a niche publication, it fits within a broader contemporary movement of artists utilizing direct-to-audience platforms to share memoirs and reflective prose without editorial intervention.
