Christophori Clauii Bamb. ex Societate Iesu, in sphæram Ioannis de Sacro Bosco, commentarius

Published in 1608 by Samuel Crispin, this commentary on Johannes de Sacro Bosco’s 'Tractatus de Sphaera' represents the culmination of the work of Christoph Clavius, a prominent Jesuit mathematician and astronomer. Clavius served as the primary scientific advisor to the Vatican and was instrumental in the development of the Gregorian calendar. His commentary was intended to serve as a comprehensive astronomical textbook for Jesuit colleges, blending traditional Aristotelian and Ptolemaic cosmology with the emerging observational data of the late Renaissance.

The work is noted for its exhaustive detail and its role as an educational standard in 17th-century European institutions. By meticulously annotating Sacro Bosco’s medieval text, Clavius provided a bridge between classical geocentrism and the astronomical challenges posed by his contemporaries, including Galileo Galilei. The text is esteemed by scholars for its rigor and for providing insight into the intellectual rigor of the Jesuit scientific tradition during a period of profound transition in astronomical understanding.
