Communings of the spirit

Communings of the Spirit represents a deeply personal selection of the private journals kept by Mordecai Menahem Kaplan, the influential rabbi and philosopher who founded Reconstructionist Judaism. Published in 2001 by Wayne State University Press, the volume captures the internal intellectual and spiritual struggles of a man who spent his life attempting to reconcile traditional religious practice with the findings of modern science and sociology. The entries span decades, offering a candid window into the mind of a pivotal twentieth-century theologian as he navigated the challenges of evolving communal and personal faith.

The editorial process for this collection was designed to preserve the integrity of Kaplan's original reflections, balancing his rigorous academic output with the raw vulnerability found in his private musings. By bringing these formerly private journals into the public sphere, the curators intended to demystify the man behind the movement and provide researchers and laypeople alike with a clearer understanding of the development of Reconstructionist thought. The book has been well-received in academic circles as a vital primary source for understanding the shifting landscape of American Jewish identity during the mid-twentieth century.
