Daniels' running formula

Daniels' Running Formula was authored by Dr. Jack Daniels, a renowned exercise physiologist and former Olympic coach who sought to distill decades of scientific research into a practical guide for athletes. The work emerged from his tenure at the High Altitude Training Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he refined the VDOT system—a methodology for determining training intensities based on individual performance capacity. Published during a period when endurance sports were seeing a surge in data-driven training, the book aimed to demystify complex physiological principles for the everyday runner.

The design and pedagogical structure of the book are centered on the concept of 'training phases,' which allow athletes to balance effort and recovery systematically. Daniels focused on accessibility, ensuring that the VDOT tables and prescriptive pacing charts could be utilized by both elite competitors and recreational joggers. Upon its release, the text was widely received as a foundational manual in the running community, earning a reputation as one of the most authoritative resources on aerobic conditioning and periodization.
