Where it came from
Published in 2001 by the Leiden University Library, this scholarly work serves as a definitive historical account of the Burcht van Leiden, an iconic shell keep located in the heart of Leiden. Ed van der Vlist, a noted specialist associated with the university, authored the text to provide a comprehensive look at the architectural evolution and strategic significance of the site, which dates back to the 11th century. The book was produced as part of the library’s commitment to documenting the rich heritage of the city and its most prominent landmarks.
The design of the book adheres to the formal traditions of Dutch academic publishing, emphasizing clarity, archival integrity, and historical context. It serves both as a guide for those visiting the monument and as a reference volume for historians interested in medieval fortification. Upon its release, the volume was received as a valuable contribution to local history, prized by institutional libraries and academic collectors for its meticulous research and its role in preserving the narrative of one of the Netherlands' oldest remaining defensive structures.
