De la connoissance de soi-mesme

Published in Paris in 1694 by A. Pralard, De la connoissance de soi-mesme serves as a significant representative of 17th-century French philosophical and religious discourse. Written by the Benedictine monk François Lamy, the work reflects the intellectual climate of the era, which was deeply influenced by both Cartesian rationalism and traditional Augustinian theology. Lamy’s primary objective was to reconcile emerging scientific inquiries into human nature with the Christian emphasis on introspection and self-abnegation.

The design and dissemination of this text were typical of the scholarly publishing standards of the late Grand Siècle, featuring the formal typography and structured layout favored by theological presses of the period. The work was intended for a learned audience of clerics and intellectuals, aiming to guide them through the complexities of human psychology as understood through a spiritual lens. It received attention for its meticulous synthesis of metaphysical thought, helping to solidify Lamy's reputation as a key intellectual figure among the Maurists of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
