Where it came from
Published by the Rijksmuseum in 1961, this volume serves as a comprehensive catalog of the collection donated by Dr. J.A. van Dongen to the Rijksprentenkabinet. The publication was designed to document and honor the extensive acquisition of prints and drawings, capturing the institutional transition of these private holdings into the public domain of the Netherlands' national museum.
The catalog reflects the mid-century academic approach to art documentation, prioritizing detailed inventory and historical context for the benefit of scholars and collectors. It was produced under the auspices of the Rijksmuseum to ensure the preservation and accessibility of Van Dongen’s specific aesthetic vision, which focused on the mastery of printmaking techniques and European graphic traditions that had been carefully curated over decades.
