Delle navigationi et viaggi raccolte da M. Gio. Battista Ramusio

Delle navigationi et viaggi, compiled by the Venetian diplomat and humanist Giovanni Battista Ramusio, stands as one of the most significant ethnographic and geographical collections of the Renaissance. First published in the mid-16th century, the work was designed to consolidate disparate accounts of global exploration, including voyages to the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Ramusio operated within the intellectual hub of Venice, leveraging his access to merchant records, personal journals, and government archives to create a comprehensive, multi-volume narrative that bridged the gap between medieval travel lore and early modern scientific observation.

The publication was produced by the prominent Giunti press, known for its high-quality typography and commitment to humanistic texts. Ramusio approached the project with an editorial rigor that prioritized the recovery of firsthand testimony, often translating and editing letters and logs to suit a scholarly audience. The work was met with immense acclaim for its expansive scope, serving as a primary reference point for European cartographers and explorers throughout the Age of Discovery. Its inclusion of detailed maps and woodcut illustrations provided a visual framework that fundamentally reshaped the European understanding of world geography.
