Where it came from
Published in 1986 by Prestel, this scholarly monograph examines the work of the Master of the Wolfgang Missal of Rein, an anonymous late-medieval artist active in the circle of the Cistercian monastery of Rein in Styria. Hinrich Sieveking authored this study to provide a definitive analysis of the artist’s illumination style, which represents a sophisticated synthesis of Southern German and Austrian Gothic manuscript traditions during the 15th century.
The book serves as a vital art-historical record for researchers of codicology and liturgical manuscript illumination. Sieveking’s methodology focuses on stylistic attribution and iconography, contextualizing the Master's miniatures within the broader evolution of monastic book production. It is recognized in academic circles as a foundational resource for understanding the specific aesthetic lineage of the Rein Missal and its influence on regional workshops of the period.
