Der Pacher-Altar in St. Wolfgang

Published in 1981 by Böhlau, this monograph by Manfred Koller serves as a definitive scholarly analysis of the Pacher Altar, the monumental winged altarpiece crafted by Michael Pacher for the pilgrimage church in St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Austria. Created between 1471 and 1481, the altar is considered a pinnacle of late Gothic art, notable for its complex synthesis of northern woodcarving traditions and Italian Renaissance perspective techniques.

Manfred Koller, a distinguished expert in art conservation and restoration, approached the work with a focus on both historical context and the physical materiality of the piece. The book was produced to document the altar's intricate craftsmanship and iconographic significance, providing researchers and art historians with a comprehensive reference that captures the intellectual and artistic climate of the fifteenth-century Alpine region.
