Die Balkankrise Von 1875 Bis 1878 Im Spiegel Osmanischer und Westlicher Karikaturen

Published in 2016 by Peter Lang, this academic monograph by Elif Elmas explores the complex geopolitical tensions of the late 19th-century Balkans through the lens of visual media. The work specifically examines the period between 1875 and 1878, a tumultuous era marked by the Great Eastern Crisis and the eventual collapse of Ottoman influence in the region. By comparing contemporary political cartoons from both Ottoman and Western sources, the text provides a nuanced analysis of how different cultures framed the Balkan uprisings and the subsequent diplomatic interventions of European powers.

The book serves as a scholarly investigation into the role of caricature as a tool for public opinion and imperial rhetoric. Elmas evaluates the distinct visual vocabularies used by international illustrators to caricature the Sultan, the revolutionary movements, and the interventionist strategies of states like Russia and Austria-Hungary. As part of Peter Lang's specialized history catalog, the volume is intended for researchers of Eastern European history, media studies, and Ottoman diplomacy, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of late 19th-century journalism and nationalistic propaganda.
