Die Parallelperikopen bei Lukas und Johannes

Julius Schniewind wrote Die Parallelperikopen bei Lukas und Johannes in 1914 as a rigorous contribution to New Testament scholarship, specifically addressing the source-critical debates regarding the relationship between the Gospels of Luke and John. It emerged from a period of intense German academic focus on the 'Johannine problem' and the quest to understand how the synoptic traditions interacted with the fourth Gospel, reflecting the meticulous theological methodology prevalent in early 20th-century German universities.

The work is recognized for its careful textual analysis, aiming to map the parallels in pericopes between the two Evangelists to discern literary dependence or shared tradition. Scholars of the era valued Schniewind's structural approach to the text, which helped solidify his reputation as a formidable exegete. Though largely restricted to specialized libraries and academic study, the book remains a classic reference point for students of Johannine studies and historical criticism.
