Das Evangelium nach Markus

Das Evangelium nach Markus, published in 1949 by Siebenstern-Taschenbuch-Verlag, emerged during the immediate post-war period in Germany. It features commentary by the influential Protestant theologian Julius Schniewind, whose work during this era sought to address the spiritual and existential vacuum left by the collapse of the Third Reich. By providing a scholarly yet accessible interpretation of the Gospel of Mark, the text was intended to engage a readership grappling with themes of faith, suffering, and renewal in a fractured society.

The publication belongs to the early tradition of German paperback theology, designed to disseminate critical biblical scholarship to a broader public beyond the academic elite. Schniewind, a key figure in the Confessing Church, was known for his efforts to reconcile modern historical-critical methods with traditional Christian faith. The edition is characterized by its austere, functional design typical of the post-war German publishing industry, which prioritized textual substance and portability over elaborate ornamentation.
