Where it came from
Published in 1871 by A.D.F. Randolph & Company, this work is a biographical discourse authored by John G. Adams. It serves as a formal tribute to the life, medical career, and character of Dr. Alex Hodgdon Stevens, a prominent 19th-century American surgeon and professor who held significant influence within the medical community of New York City during the mid-1800s.
The publication follows the tradition of Victorian-era commemorative pamphlets, which were often commissioned to preserve the legacy of esteemed public figures and academics. Adams, tasked with chronicling Stevens's achievements, focuses on the doctor's dedication to clinical surgery and his tenure at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, reflecting the solemn, respectful tone characteristic of commemorative literature from the post-Civil War period.
